my BRI-ography

I guess I could start off this way….

my name is Brigitte Acton, I’m 24 originally from Soo – for those of you who need some more info – Sault Ste Marie, Ontario. I’m the youngest of 3. Older brother Gavan, sister Lise-Marie. Gavan has a beautiful family with his wife Lindsay, which makes me a proud aunt to my niece Claire and nephew Sydney. Lise-Marie, is like my older twin and she is in Medical School (almost done). We always get asked if we are twins, but she is 4 years older then me!

I spend most of my time living out of my bags going from country to country, hotel to hotel… but when I do have time off I call home either Tampa, FL or Verona, Ontario. My boyfriend Mike, plays hockey ( in Tampa)  so fortunately we get to spend sometime together in the summer. He is a goalie, pretty good at it too… :) haha!

I’m lucky my parents love to travel so they seem to be globe trotting attempting to track down their daughter.

I grew up skiing at Searchmont… 45 minutes outside of the Soo. Awesome little hill. My family has this amazing little chalet or as people out west say “cabin”. It’s a museum on the inside. Posters of old skiers (my dad and uncle…. no offense guys)… A Olympic flag from the 1972 Sapporo, Japan Games… which my mom raced in. I would stare at that flag and it’s true I did say when I was 11 “I want to go to the Olympics just like my mom”. Old skis, bindings. A million medals! Tiny red wooden skis which probably every ACTON kid started on…. they are “one of a kind”!!!! I spent many weekends skiing and racing. I LOVED IT!!!!

I went from skiing, local races, Inco Cups,  provincials, nationals, Nor-Ams, Europas to World Cups! I spent 2 years living with my grandparents in Mont-Tremblant, Quebec when I was 15. I miss those days!!!!! My “Papi” would have to drive me every morning and pick me up everyday from the hill…both him and my “Mamie” sometimes. I am so thankful they were able to help me then.

I skied for the Quebec Ski Team during one of those years, then I was on the Development National Team… and it just kept going….

Now I find myself, about to compete in my 2nd Olympics and going in with the heart of ALL OR NOTHING!!!!!!

………………………………besides skiing…………………………………

I grew up on Lake Superior…. well the opening of Lake Superior, St Mary’s River…. a beautiful beach, and CLEAR water… I can see the bottom from the end of the dock…but…… it’s not very deep. AT ALL! Which I enjoy. I grew up water skiing, doing gymnastics, swimming, I played soccer for a long time, till skiing slowly took over all my freetime.

I took up golf when I was 15, with my sister and also because my mom wanted us to learn with her. It isn’t an easy sport at all… frustrating but at times when you hit the ball like butter, those make up for all those other terrible shots.  I’m also one of those “road bikers”… Mike and I get all GEARED AND NERD-ED up and go out for rides in the summer (rain or shine) because it’s great for both our sports and endurance. We have had some memorable rides with MANY WRONG TURNS, sometimes thinking I should be on my moutain bike. I love to cross country ride, but I am not at all an expert. Just doing anything outside and in the mountains always makes me happy.

I’ve recently been introduced to fishing. Something I didn’t do a lot of as a kid, but I am slowly learning the ropes. I still don’t love the slim and the smell. But I can take the casting, the sitting, waiting, watching, sun bathing and relaxing part about it.

I love to cook! Not bake… cook. I am a terrible baker!!!! I wish I would have spent more time in the kitchen with my grandparents when I lived with them. They are quite the “CHEFS”! And obviously I think my MAMAN’s (mom) cooking is AMAZING!!!! I’m not a picky eater at all, but I hate olives!!

That pretty much sums up getting to know me….

    Hello Brigitte,
My daughter is doing you as her Canadian Olympic Athlete for her school project!(is it weird to be someone’s school project?) She is really excited about learning who you are, what motivates you and all about your sport so she is able to share it with her classmates. We are hoping your blog will contain some information on what the difference between slalom and giant slalom is, how you are preparing for the Olympics, what you think about before you launch yourself down the mountain? This will help give her assignment a personal touch. We will be cheering you on at the Olympics!

Love to read and hear about all you’ve accomplished – especially love to see the way your Dad’s face lights up when he talks about you. I have watched you grow from the sweetest little girl to a stunning beautiful woman and I am so proud to know you. I tell your Dad all the time “I want to be an Acton”:

Good luck in the Olympics – all of us at Wishart’s will be cheering you on.

Congrats on getting on the team again. I have been looking for your pictures to show to may patients but they are all changed.

We will be in K.L. and Kenogami and the cottage during the second week. Somewhere somehow we will find a T.V. to follow your progress.

We are following with keen interest and wish you the very best.

Brigitte I am so proud of all you have accomplished. It has been my pleasure to watch you grow up to be the beautiful woman, athlete, daughter and friend that you are. Many days spent watching you on the soccer field or timing you in race at Searchmont or sharing a glass of wine makes me feel honored to not only know you but love you as a friend. I wish you all the success you deserve. Regardless of the final outcome of this journey stand proud. You are amazing!
